The Last Leaves of Autumn at Oosoola Park

1. BAEA-kab Bald Eagle in tree along the Kennebec River in Norridgewock, ME
On November 5th Gus and I drove to Norridgewock and while he visited with his parents, I went out birding at various locations. One of my favorite spots to bird is at Oosoola Park at the junction of routes 2 and 139. There is ample parking along the bank with a public boat launch and a playground for kids.
2. Norridgwock bridge-kab You can see the new Norridgewock bridge from this location.

3. Kennebec backwater-kab In this quiet backwater I often find ducks or a kingfisher.

4. Info sign-kab I discovered this plaque along the riverbank. I had not noticed it before.

5. park penisula-kab Usually I just stay near the boat launch, but this time I walked past the playground and discovered the park is really on a bit of a peninsula. While there were not a lot of birds, I did see a few species (see list below).

6. Oosoola Park-kab Leaves littered the ground and drifted from trees, paper gold backlit by sun.

7. golden leaves-kab Birches or alders?

8. autumn gold-kab
9. autumn gold-kab
11. autumn gold-kab
12. red oaks-kab Oak leaves-red

13. golden oaks-kab Oak leaves-gold

14. sumac-kab Sumac Seed Cones

15. leaves in water-kab Ripples

16. path-kab I followed this path almost to the end.

17. across the Kennebec-kab House across the river from the park

18. trail-kab The path back to the boat launch.

19. Moonrise-kab Moonrise over the hills of Norridgewock.
I am told that the name Norridgewock is from an Abenaki word meaning, “smooth water between two rapids.” Well, Autumn is rapidly waning, and winter is rapidly approaching. These were truly the last leaves of autumn, for when my husband returned to Norridgewock this past weekend he said there were no leaves left on the trees. Brace yourselves…here comes winter!

  1. Hi Kathie

I loved the first photo of the bald eagle with the red tree. The rest of your shots with the beautiful fall colours are wonderful as well. We just never get that kind of colour here.

    Regards
    Guy

  2. Oh guy, I feel so sorry for you! When the light comes through the trees like this it is just gorgeous!

  3. Kathie, this is a most colorful example of what I imagine fall on east to be. The light through the leaves reminds me of stained glass. All so very different than the SW.

And I'm not ready for winter.

  4. Gaelyn, this is the northeast in all it's glory and so pretty to see, though a cold wind was blowing! Still, I hope you can see it someday. And I am not ready for winter either!
