Something New at the Bog

1. gray bog-kab Stirling Bog 5-9-12

It is a cool, damp day when I head to the bog to count birds. After days of rain the bog is full of water and birds! In amongst the stumps I see something new, something I have never seen here before…

2. egret-kab A Great Egret!

3. GREG-kabThe Egret is hunting among the new green reeds, but…

4. Hunter-kab He is not the only hunter!

5. jungle cat-kab A domestic tiger leaps…

6. tiger-kab and slips away into the grass.

Perhaps this is why I am not seeing many small birds.

7. green bog-kab The bog is getting greener every day.

8. oriole-kab Baltimore Oriole May 10, 2012

When I return the next day there are even more birds to see.

9. mockingbird-kab Mockingbirds are singing up a storm!

10. egret beauty-kab The egret is still here! Only this time it is at the south end of the bog!

11. flickers-kab Northern (Yellow-shafted) Flickers

Across from me on a snag a pair of flickers mate and break apart.

12. flying-kab Flicker in flight 5-10-12

13. bullet bird-kab

Wing tucked, beak extended, the bird looks like a bullet!

14. flicker-kab

The male watches her fly away.

15. hunter returns-kab

Once again I see the domestic tiger hunting the bog.

16. female redwings-kab

While the blackbirds sing.

  11. The second shot of the egret looks like she is wearing a gossamer gown! This swamp reminds me so much of the Great Dismal Swamp we used to visit in Virginia!
