The Burrowing Owls of the Parking Lot

DSC_0199 Burrowing owls-kab Burrowing Owls 9-2-13

On the south side of town is a parking lot well known to birders where a family of Burrowing Owls has made its home in one of the drainage slots in the parking lot. I had been here once before trying to find them with no luck, but it was during the week on a busy day. Today was Labor Day and NO ONE was here…except the owls! My sweet husband drove me there in his Camaro Convertible so it was easy for us to stay in the car and use it as a blind. He parked the car and I took my shots but I also just sat there and watched the birds through my binoculars. It is a rare chance indeed to get this close to these birds. At first we only saw three birds but then…

DSC_0211 and then there were 4-kab …a fourth little bird popped out! What a cute family!

I wonder if there are anymore in there?

While I have already seen burrowing owls earlier this year on the Santa Cruz Flats in Pinal County, seeing them here put them on my Pima County List for the year.

  3. I used to see one perched every morning on one of the white water things out in the ag fields by my school. I'll have to see if he is still there! I used to drive by to take his picture, and he would turn his little head all the way around the other way! Pffffftttttttt!

    1. Roy, yes, Gus' convertible did make a great bird hide! They birds were not the least bit worried or distressed! We were just one car on a quiet day but during the week this parking lot is full and busy, so I guess they must be used to cars!

  14. Wow...how neat is that! I almost never see owls. The next time I am out there if they are still around, you will have to tell me where to find them.
