One trick is to look for streaking on the sides of the male house finches. Purple's are not so streaky. Also, purple finches have a more rasberry color to them and they have a totally red crown whereas a House finch has a red "headband" with a brownish cap. As for the females, the purple finch has more of a defined pattern to her face whereas the house finch is over all brownish and streaky. Hope this helps.
