Birding with my Blogging Buddies

1. Cynthia and Chris-kab Two Tired (but happy) Birders! 3-2-13

On March 2nd Chris and I met fellow blogger and birder, Cynthia Gabert White at a local coffee shop for a day full of birding. While Chris had the pleasure of meeting Cynthia earlier this year, this would be my first time to meet her in person, though I did already know her somewhat from her blog. After chatting a bit with her and her husband, Chris and I whisked her away and we were off to Sweetwater Wetlands for our first bird count of the day. All three of us belong to a birding group started by Dawn Fine called The Birders who blog, Tweet, and Chirp. We were hoping Dawn would be here this winter so we could convene a gathering of bird bloggers once again, but sadly, things did not work out. But, in a way, we were our own little group of BwBTC and we thought of and spoke of Dawn often throughout the day! Dawn, we missed you!

We barely parked the car and we were already seeing and hearing birds. Besides the birds, there were birders everywhere! It looked like it would be a busy morning. Besides seeing the regular species, we were on the hunt for a summer tanager that had been reported there, as well as a black and white warbler, which is far out of its range. When we saw a streaky little bird up in a tree near the bridge we thought we found the black and white warbler…until we got a better look at it!

3. song sp-kab Only a song sparrow!

4. stop-kab Quit taking my picture!

5. whatyoulookinat-kab Quit taking my picture!

I think Chris and the song sparrow have similar looks on their faces!

6. at Sweetwater-kab Cynthia and Chris looking at birds in one of the ponds.

Many times when I am with other birders I tend to step back and search for birds, then let them take the photos. Cynthia saw many new Life Birds today. We were all having a great time.

7. summer tananger-kab We soon found the female Summer Tanager on the east side of the park. The Black and white Warbler was in the same area and at times in the same tree as the tanager, but I did not get any photos of it.

8. cuth-kab Further down the trail we found a Curve-billed Thrasher thrashing in the dirt!

9. common gallinule-kab Common Gallinule (moorhen)

After wandering around the park for over an hour it started to get very warm and we were just about done when I saw a strange bird across the pond. While Chris and Cynthia stayed behind to chat with another birder, I went in search of the unknown bird. Left to myself, I did find this White-crowned sparrow up in a tree, which I find unusual since I am used to seeing them on the ground. It was our first sighting of a white-crowned for the day, so I sent Chris a text telling him to bring Cynthia over to this side. I never did find the mystery bird, which looked like a bunting when I was on the other side.

11. ocwarbler-kab While I waited for Chris and Cynthia I photographed a very obliging Orange-crowned Warbler!

12. sora-kab Then, in the reeds behind us we found a Sora!

After leaving Sweetwater we stopped for a quick breakfast, then headed for Saguaro National Park’s Rincon Unit on the east side, but when Cynthia said she did not have a good photo of a Vermilion Flycatcher we decided to stop at Reid Park on the way which is a reliable place to find them. However, since it was the weekend the place was PACKED! I mean Packed! People were waiting for parking spaces as a baseball game was going on in one of the venues. I grabbed one of the last ones and we trekked across the park searching for a vermilion. With all the people there they were a bit harder to find. With the temperature rising we were all hot and trying to bird by hopping from shady spot to shady spot. Finally, on our way back to the car we found the Vermilion!

13. GHOW-kab Great Horned Owl in Saguaro National Park 3-2-13

It was getting late in the day by the time we arrived at Saguaro National Park. We only had about an hour to bird before we needed to get Cynthia back to her husband in time for them to have dinner together, so we drove the 8 mile loop road quickly. On our way I spotted a Great Horned Owl perches atop a saguaro! I pulled over and we all hopped out to photograph it, but it was still quite distant from us and the photos weren’t the best, especially with the western sun shining so brightly on the bird. We then headed for the Javalina Picnic area, since Cynthia really wanted a picture of a Northern Cardinal, which she says she never sees in her area of Arizona. I can reliably find Northern Cardinals at the Javalina Picnic area and sure enough, we found three! Cynthia was in photographic bliss as she snapped away! Then, it was time to leave. We said good-bye in front of her hotel, then went on our way. It was a full day of birding and so much fun. I think we were all tired but I fear Chris and I wore Cynthia out!

A Return to Agua Caliente Park

1. Palms-kab Agua Caliente Park 9-9-2012
On a windy Sunday morning at the beginning of September I agreed to meet a fellow blogger at Agua Caliente Park in northwest, Tucson. Agua Caliente was one of my favorite birding spots from when I lived here before and this would be my first time birding here since my return. With my husband and son both at home watching football, it was a nice break from all the unpacking since I moved back.
2. chris-kab Chris of Las Adventuras
I knew Chris from his blog, Las Adventuras, but had never met him in person. We met in the parking lot and were soon decked out with binoculars and cameras. The park was amazingly quiet from what I remembered, but a cool wind was blowing giving us the feeling of Autumn, even if it really wasn’t here yet. We headed towards the spring fed pond where the only ducks were the resident mallards. In the winter this spot is a great place to find ducks.
2a. reeds-kab The gusting wind was blowing a gale keeping most of the birds down, but finally was saw a small flock of grackles lift out of the reeds and into the air.
3. turtles-kab Around the side of the pond we found a few red-eared sliders trying to bask in the sun.

4. gila woodpecker-kab Finally a Gila woodpecker flew up onto a dead snag.

5. breadfruit-kabWe learned this fruit that looks like a green brain is called breadfruit, a remnant from when this was a working ranch and planted as an ornamental tree. We found this fruit on the trail through the mesquite bosque at the back side of the park.
6. mesquite bosque-kab The shaded path through the mesquite bosque.

7. back country-kab Once through the mesquite trail it opens up again to an overflow pond, dry now except for a small puddle. Once out in the open we started to feel the effects of the sun, even though the wind kept blowing. We found a few sparrows in the brush, and then…

8. who's this-kab …this! Who’s this hiding in the scrub?

9. hiding-kab Rusty cap, green tail…I think I know!

10. greeentailed towhee-kab A Green-tailed Towhee! My first since my return!
After this we weren’t seeing many birds, so I focused on the native plants.
11. barrel cactus-kab A flowering barrel cactus!

12. saguaro-kabA Giant Saguaro

13. breadfruit-kab The non-native breadfruit again.

14. turtles-kab On our way back to the parking lot we saw more turtles.

15. Chris and I-kab Chris and I at Aqua Caliente Park (photo taken by a passer-by)
By the end of our two hours of birding Chris and I were fast friends. We had a great time and made further plans to go birding again. Below is the list of birds we saw on this very windy day In Agua Caliente Park.

It's Been a Long Time

It's been awhile since I have posted, but not from lack of stories to tell or photos I have taken. When blogger went down over a week ago my computer got infested with a horrible virus that stripped away my Picture Project Photo files and my Live Writer with all the stories I had ready to go. Until my computer is cleaned and restored, I cannot use it to blog or do anything. I have a tech scheduled to come on Monday and we will see what happens.

Meanwhile, I am currently down at my Mother's house in Colchester, CT after having hurt my back earlier this week. I spent Monday in the emergency room and then my Mom drove up to Massachusetts to help me out. On Wednesday I had to appear in court for a case involving a person who has threatened me. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was let out on probation, so I decided it was best to leave town for a few days. Thus, this is why you have not heard from me and I have not been writing! So sorry, because I miss you all and I miss blogging.

The truth is, I have been in too much pain to watch birds all week until this morning. I fell asleep last night to the gentle sound of rain outside and awoke to the sweet songs of birds singing. I hobbled to the kitchen window with my cane and gazed out through the wavy glass at cardinals, catbirds and sparrows. This afternoon I saw a white-crowned sparrow for the first time ever in Connecticut. My Connecticut Life List is now up to 117 species! Yay!

I don't know if I will be able to go beyond my Mother's yard while I am here and I did not bring my camera because it hurts my back to even lift it. I hope to be well soon and be back to birding as normal. I am thankful for this chance to use my Mother's computer but I cannot sit here for long. Just know that you are all in my thoughts and I am still in good spirits and I still love the birds!

One nice thing happened in the past month is I was the featured blogger for Birding Blogs.com. Dawn Fine did an excellent job and you can read her article: Featured Poet-Bird-Blogger by clicking on the link.

Dear Blogging Friends,

I purchased more photo space on Picasa Web Albums last night because I took a walk yesterday and I have many nice photos to upload and show you.  However, it takes up to 24 hours for the storage space to activate.  I just tried a few minutes ago and it still says I am out of my 1 GB of storage space. I have the post written and the photos uploaded onto my computer.  As soon as blogger will let me, I will finish the post and upload it!

It has been very hard to be disconnected from my blog.  I am so eager to get back at it on a regular basis. To make matters worse, when I tried to upload from blogger-in-draft they had a whole new format and it did not appear as if there was a link to upload photos from my computer. There were just 3 links (I thought) to upload from "this blog," "Picasa web albums" or "a url." I did NOT want to have to start uploading all my photos into Picasa and then access them from there. My time is precious and I need this to be simple and easy.  I am not a techie so when things go wrong with my computer it freaks me out. Anyways, I was writing my blogger eptitath when I tried again. I clicked on the upload images link and looked again.  There was a link that just said "upload" and to the right of it was a window and a buttton with the word "browse" on it. I clicked on the browse button on a whim and it brought up access to the files on my computer!  Hurray!  Now, I did go to the blogger Help Forum and read all kinds of answers about how to "work around this problem."  One person even suggested they would go get a Word Press blog.  There were suggestions to go back to the old format (if you know how to do that) or try a different browser or computer (why would that matter?). Still, I don't think it should be this complicated and no one ever said, "Oh, we changed the format. Just click on the browse button next to the "upload" link and it will give you access to the files on your computer." That SIMPLE answer would save many people frustration!!!!!!!!!!! (and tears).

So, Now I just have to wait (I hope) and soon new photos and old will be posting once again.

BTW, I wrote this whole post out to hopefully save someone else from all this frustration that I have experienced today. And just to vent. Whining makes me feel better! (and no, I do not want any cheese with my whine!) I so want to get back to blogging on a regular basis!

As for the birds, my feeders are up and the little birdies are visiting me on a regular basis now.  I am so happy!
