Notes from My Nest: Changes

1. 6-29-15 the western mountains of Maine The Mountains of Maine 6-29-15

It is a cool, gray day here on Mere Point. Gus and I are spending a quiet weekend at home. It has been awhile since I have written and a lot has changed in the past few months. I am done with physical therapy on my shoulder. It is almost as good as new. While I still have a lingering soreness in my thigh from where I had a huge bruise and hematoma after falling through the hole in the floor, most of the other symptoms have resolved themselves over time. I must say that this injury has deeply affected my life and changed me in many ways. I did not like being dependant on others for help. I did not like feeling helpless, and having this happen really made me feel old. While I am starting to feel like myself again, I find I am more cautious and more focused on getting and staying strong and healthy. I still have one remaining health concern. Before I fell through the floor and dislocated my shoulder, and before I had surgery last Christmas, I had trouble with my knee and was on crutches for about 10 days. That problem was never dealt with, but now it is finally being addressed as my knee can be just fine, then suddenly it will lock up on me and I cannot walk. I am going for an MRI this week. Hopefully we will get some answers.

2. 7-1-15 summer green Meanwhile, my time here at Mere Point has come to an end. Our lease on this cottage is up and we have chosen to move elsewhere. While Gus would love to move back to Tucson, (and he has been relentlessly applying for jobs there) so far there is no job offer, so we find ourselves on the lookout for a new place to rent. We have to be out of here by August 7th and as yet, we have no place to go. Hopefully something will change this week and our path will become clear.

3. flowers everywhere It’s funny how when you think you are leaving a place that everything becomes sharper and clearer. I find myself focusing on the greenness of the vegetation, the coolness of the air, and the scent of the salty sea. Right now the raspberries are all in bloom and their fragrance perfumes the air here in my yard and at the boat launch. Underlying all of these smells is the fragrance of pine and the scent of new mown grass. These are the smells of New England to me, made sweeter by the thought of moving away from them again.

4. 6-27-15 Siblings Me and my siblings 6-27-15

It is no secret that I have married a gypsy boy. He likes to move around, and I have been grateful for all the places that we have been able to see and experience, but now I am ready to settle down and quit moving. I want my own house again, and Gus wants to move to Tucson for good. He has decided it is his favorite place on earth and it is where he would like to retire. All of this makes me pensive and sweetly sad as I think of leaving my family once again. Yet, there is no telling when that might happen. Either way, we have to move and there will be yet another new yard and a new yard list. In my 18 months here, I have seen 117 species of birds. This has been THE BEST YARD ever.

In yet another change, I am sad to report that the Birding is Fun blog is going into retirement for now. I have enjoyed my time as a writer for this blog and am proud of my association with it. When Robert Mortenson was at the helm it was of unparalleled quality. I was sad to see him step down and now I am even more sad to see it end. But, as the saying goes, “To everything there is a Season, and a Time for every purpose under heaven…”

Here are some scenes from where I have been birding lately:

5. 6-20-15 Messalonskee Lake Boat ramp 6-20-15 Messalonskee Boat Ramp

Gus and I stopped by here on our way to visit Dad the day before father’s Day. I was able to see 4 Black Terns flying out over the lake as well as my first ever in Maine Pied-billed Grebe! Just a short distance farther up the road I got my Purple martins for the year!

6. 6-26-15 mere point bay 6-26-15 The boats are back in the water at Mere Point Bay

7. 6-27-15 Mom's yard 6-27-15 Mom’s backyard sanctuary in Colchester, CT

On the weekend of June 27th we travelled to Connecticut for the annual Adams Family Road Race and Mom’s 79th birthday! I did not run, of course, but took photos and counted birds! I was hoping to find a Yellow-throated vireo and I think I may have heard one, but I did not see it so I did not count it because I was not sure. I counted a total of 20 species for Lake Hayward on this day. As you can see from the photo below, Mom’s hair is finally starting to grow back in after her latest battle with breast cancer. We are all so glad that she is still here to celebrate her birthday!

8. 6-27-15 Family 7-27-15 Mom and her kids and one grandkid and their spouses

(My oldest brother had already left by the time it occurred to us to get a family photo!)

On June 29th I drove to Franklin County to count birds. This is yet another of the under-birded counties here in Maine. It was late in the day when I arrived after dropping my daughter off at her current residence in Livermore. I drove up the road to discover a place called Pine Island in the middle of the Androscoggin River.

10. 6-29-15 bridge to Pine Island Livermore 6-29-15 Bridge to Pine Island

I crossed the bridge and followed a path down to the woods by the river. I saw several warblers down in that cool green place, as well as a mink that came slinking out of the undergrowth. We were both surprised to see each other and I slowly raised my camera hoping for a photo, but the small brown animal quietly turned and slipped back into the green foliage before I could focus on it! I counted 10 species on Pine Island before heading for Wilson Pond in Wilton, Maine where I counted 8 species. It was getting late by now and I only had a short time to count birds before it got dark. While I did not see a lot of birds at the lake, I did see a pair of loons and some tree swallows.

9. 6-30-15 raccoon in yard

6-30-15 Back at home, a raccoon has been hanging around the yard!

12. 7-2-15 Brunswick Landing 7-2-15 The South End of Brunswick Landing airfield.

I counted 23 species in 1 1/2 hours while driving 4.4 miles through Brunswick Landing on this day. There have been a lot of changes to the Landing since I moved here 18 months ago with new businesses going in and lots of construction going on. One of my favorite areas to bird is down in back where the old army bunkers are, but it has been gated off and one can no longer drive down there. I believe you can still hike in, but it is a bit of a walk with lots of black flies and mosquitoes and with my knee being the way it is, I have not attempted it.

13. 7-3-15 breakfast cafe in Topsham 7-3-15 Blueberries on Bowdoin Island Mill in Topsham, Maine.

Gus and I went here for breakfast yesterday. It was so nice that we sat outside and of course, I counted birds while we ate! There were song sparrows and yellow warblers singing in the trees and bushes while chimney swifts twittered overhead. Afterwards I walked over to the river’s edge where I saw dozens of herring gulls, three Great Blue Herons, and a Bald Eagle! I counted 10 species in the 45 minutes we were here.

14. 7-3-15 Bowdoin Mill Island 7-3-15 Bricks and roses under a bright blue sky on Bowdoin Mill Island

Then, we stopped by Wharton Point on our way home.

15. 7-3-15 Wharton Point high tide 7-3-15 High Tide at Wharton Point

The Song Sparrows and Bobolinks were singing up a symphony here!

16. 7-3-15 Mating horseshoe crabs Wharton Point 7-3-14 Horseshoe crabs were too busy mating to notice the birds!

So, Happy Fourth of July everyone!

We can only wait and see what the Future holds!

But for now…I think I’ll take a nap!

Notes from my Nest: It’s a Gray Day in Maine

1. 3-23-14 DSC_0066 rbgu wharton point-kab I photographed these Ring-billed Gulls just about a year ago at Wharton point in Maine shortly after we moved here. My Birding is Fun blogpost is up with photos of some of the

Spring Birds in Maine

So far the only “spring birds” I have seen are starlings in the yard!

2. 3-14-15 gray day-cell pic Meanwhile, this gray and dreary day has made me pensive, and so I wrote a poem which is also posted on Kathie’s Poet Tree:

Gray Day

Looking out the window panes

On a gray landscape;

Gray squirrels playing on gray tree trunks,

Gray sky waiting

Steel clouds billow and flatten

Dove skies bleed

Drops of liquid silver

Dull earth waits for water it cannot absorb

Gray birds sing in wet trees

Late winter rain turns gently to snow

And paints the world in white despair again.

Portrait of a Least Sandpiper

1. least Sandpiper-kab Least Sandpiper at Barnes Point 9-6-2014

On the first weekend of September this year we celebrated the first ever World Shorebirds Day. For three days that weekend people were encouraged to go out and count shorebirds wherever they were. One of the places I counted birds at was Barnes Landing in Brunswick, Maine. I found three Least Sandpipers feeding in the eel grass on the rocky shore. I have more photos and info to come, but I figured it was time to get some birds back on this Birding Blog!

Halloween Birds

I am posting on Birding is Fun a bit late this month due to my regular day being needed for a different post. It worked out well since I decided to have a little Halloween fun and play with the names of some bird species. There are more birds and names over on BiF. The correct names of these three species are listed below. Before scrolling down for the answers, can you name these birds?

Happy Halloween!

A Summer’s Day at Reid State Park

1. at the ocean-kab Back at the beginning of June I took my son to visit Reid State Park here in Maine. As he lives in Arizona, it was fun for me to show him the ocean. He has always loved it. Of course, I could not resist watching the birds! I was surprised to find a lingering Long-tailed Duck tucked between the swells!

2. long-tailed duck-kab Long-tailed Duck 6-3-14

At that time the Piping Plovers were just starting to nest and we found an Audubon Naturalist busy guarding the birds. In the efforts to protect the birds from predators they had laid an extra layer of fencing along the lower edge of the protected area but after some observation the naturalist saw that it was preventing the parents from getting into and out  of the enclosure easily, so she decided to remove it.

3. helping-kab Here she is removing the extra fencing which was overlapping the upright fencing and spilling onto the sand. The parent birds became quite distressed, but she worked as quickly as she could and soon moved away.

4. distressed-kab The Piping Plover parents then ran easily back to their nest.

5. piping plover-kab Peaceful Parent Plover

I have not been back to Reid State Park since June 3rd, so I do not know if this nest was successful. At that time I was still getting use to seeing these Eastern shorebirds, so when I saw the bird below I got all excited because I did not recognize it at first. But when the bird moved and eventually flew away revealing its gorgeous underwings, I knew that I was seeing…

6. willet-kab an Eastern Willet!

I also saw this gorgeous male Common Eider in the cove and I was thinking I couldn’t wait to show it to Chris Rohrer when he arrived. Little did I know that the males would soon be molting and very hard to find! Once Chris got here all we saw were female Common Eiders with ducklings!

There will be more posts coming soon with further stories of Our Big New England Birding Adventure! Meanwhile, my post is going up on Birding is Fun on August 7th. In other news, I was recently contacted by Metis Birding. They invited me to share my photos and my blog on their Facebook Page starting on Sunday. I encourage you to check it out! And, once again, there is poetry happening at Kathie’s Poet Tree!

Rose-breasted Grosbeak on Green

DSC_0103 Rose-breasted grosbeak-kab

I Photographed this male Rose-breasted Grosbeak recently at a friend’s house in Androscoggin County, Maine. When reviewing my photos I was so impresses with how lush and green the surroundings are that I wrote a poem and illustrated it with all the recent birds I have seen surrounded by green! You can see the birds and read the poem over at

More birds and posts to follow now that Chris Rohrer has gone home and I have time to think and write!

Florida Days

1. house-kab The House in Cape Coral, FL 3-7-2014

It’s been a month since my return from my visit to Cape Coral, Florida. Already those sunny days have faded into a blur of memories. This was my brother’s house. He signed a contract on it the night before we left and sold it 2 weeks later. I will never be able to visit him here again.

2. loggerhead shrike-kab From the first day I arrived I was surprised to see Loggerhead Shrikes in his yard. They were there everyday until the day I left, yet another new Florida bird for me.

3. bench-kab So many mornings I sat by the pool drinking my tea while watching and listening to birds. Several pairs of mockingbirds called and sang and fought over his backyard. Mom loved to hear them singing in the mornings. Grackles, starlings, and catbirds were seen and heard in his yard. Palm Warbler’s flitted to the ground wagging their tails, then jumped back up to the bushes. Almost every day a Northern Cardinal brightened the greenery of the backyard while catbirds mewed from deep inside the bushes.

4. street-kab I walked the streets of this Cape Coral Neighborhood counting birds for 14 days.

In those 14 days I counted 46 species on those streets!

I discovered that while lots of people count lots of birds at all the eBird Hotspots in Florida, very few people do backyard bird counts or neighborhood counts. I like to think that perhaps I contributed some important data and filled in a few blanks outside the birding hotspots.

Everyday I was there I added at least one new species to the neighborhood list, but I must say I was surprised when on our last full day in Florida this bird showed up on the front lawn. My heart skipped a beat hoping against hope that my eyes were not deceiving me. Could it really be…

5. common ground dove-kab …a Common Ground-dove!

The picture is a bit blurry because I had to take it through double pane windows, but still, you can see the black-tipped red bill and the shorter tail and shorter neck of this bird. While the plumage is similar to a Mourning Dove, the body shape and tail are quite different as well as the bill, and when this dove flew, I saw the rufous-colored underwings which are absent on a Mourning Dove.

6. fish crow-kab My, how the days did fly, and so did I.

7. great egrets-kab Mom and I took wing on March 7th. We arrived back in Connecticut on the 8th.

Gus picked us up at the train station in New London, CT and then we dropped Mom off at her house and drove all the way home to Maine that night. It wasn’t long before we were hit with snow, but now it is finally starting to melt.

8. bt grackle-kaba

Since my return I am not trying to hide…

I’m just trying to get used to living near the ocean and taking in all there is to see!

New birds are arriving daily as the snow continues to melt and migration gets into full swing! I find it so amazing to have woodland birds and sea birds on the same bird count! Today I added Common Eider, Great Black-backed Gull and Brown-headed Cowbird to my Mere Point Cottage Yard list, which now stands at 40 species (You can see the complete list in the sidebar)! There are so many birds in my yard and I am so full of wonder that I find it hard to focus or get anything else done. I’m just relaxing and counting birds!

Cactus Wren in Saguaro National Park 3-10-2013

While Arizona boasts so many unique and endemic birds, the bird sound that I most associate with Tucson and the Sonoran Desert is the Cactus Wren, which also happens to be the Arizona State Bird. I have seen so many Arizona rarities and endemics while living here. Photos of some of them are posted today on Birding is Fun so come on over and say good-bye to some Arizona birds with me!

I Married a Gypsy Man

1. us-kab Kathie, Gus and Natalie Christmas 2012

I married a gypsy man. I didn’t know that 36 years ago when we walked down the grassy path of our outdoor wedding. Perhaps I shouldn’t have used John Denver’s song, “Follow me where I go what I do and who I know…” as the song we walked off together as husband and wife, because I have been following him all over the country since then!
