Charlestown, MA (MWT)

1. Bridge-kab Leonard P. Zakim Bunkerhill Memorial Bridge 8-12-11

On August 12th I went with a friend to Charlestown, MA. Though I grew up in New England I had never been to Charlestown and I know little about it. My friend, Mary, grew up in this section of Boston in an apartment over a store! She lived there for most of her life and played in the streets. She told me there used to be an elevated train that ran right down the middle of Main Street and right past her apartment. She told me that in the winter she used to open a window and throw snowballs at the passing train. How different her life was from mine when I was growing up. I lived in the country and slept outside under the stars in the summertime. I played in grassy fields and ran wild in the woods. Mary tells me she only saw grass and trees when her family went to the cape for vacation. I cannot comprehend this.

On this day I saw plenty of trees and even a few birds flying around the streets of Boston. Mary took me to a new park called City Square Park where we had a good view of the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge. In the center of the park was a beautiful fountain with house sparrows drinking and splashing. Overhead a few chimney swifts flew and I even saw an American Robin hopping about on the grass! Later she drove me over to Bunker Hill, the site of a major battle during the revolutionary war. We had a very fun day.

Krull County Park Olcott, NY (MWT)

1. Krull Park-kab Gulls and Terns on Wharf at Krull County Park 8-1-11

Along the shore of Lake Ontario in Olcott, NY lies Krull Park. When I was there earlier this month I stopped by the park to see what I could see. On the shore side of State Route 18 I found plenty of gulls and a few Caspian terns along with a couple of Canada geese hanging out on these cement Wharfs. On the weekend the little town of Olcott has quaint little shops to visit but I was more interested in the birds and on this particular day, most of the shops were closed.

Across the street from the shore side of the park lies an extensive grassy area with soccer fields and more. I saw all these gulls as I passed by on the way to the store in Newfane. On the way back to camp I pulled in to count birds and take photos. It was mid-afternoon when I took these shots and many of the birds washed out in the bright sunlight but you can see that there must have been up to 200 Ring-billed gulls laying around in the grass. I do not know if this is how they nest but they were certainly resting here with many of them panting in the heat.

Over near the picnic tables I spotted someone having his own picnic. I don’t know what he was dining on but as I tried to creep closer for a better shot…

I backed off hoping the bird would return. I did not want to disturb his dinner, but he decided to sail through the bright blue sky instead. Still, it looks like Krull Park could be a promising place to watch birds if you are ever up this way! And that’s…

Lake Ontario Days (MWT)

1. Lake Ontario-kab Lake Ontario Shoreline near Olcott, NY 7-31-11

I have just returned from a week spent on the shore of Lake Ontario near Olcott, NY. In a way it was a returning to a place of comfort and childhood memories, for this is the camp I went to as a child. I went because I wanted to, and because the opportunity presented itself. While I have not been here in many years, my mother and sister have gone on a regular basis since 1967. However, it has been two years since my mother has been and the distance is getting too far for her to drive, so…since I am currently living here on the east coast I offered to drive her. Not only did I want to return to see the place for myself, but I was also curious about the birds I would see now that I have become a birder. Formally called the American Mission for Opening Churches we learned just this week that it is now merging with Global Mission Outreach. My mother was glad to be there when she heard the news. For me, this is the place where I first ever saw a Belted Kingfisher. I was around 13 years old then. I saw one here again on our third day. It swooped low along the steep bank below me as I watched the waves breaking on the shore. It was the only day I saw one, but I felt it was a welcome back kind of sign and I smiled.

Bass Harbor Head Light (MWT)

1. Bass harbor Light-kab DSC_0222 Bass Harbour Light 6-12-11

On a cool, gray, and dreary day in June Gus and I continued our journey along the coastline of Mount Desert Island in Maine. When we came to this lighthouse it was drizzling, so Gus parked the car and waited while I got out to explore. This is about all you can see of the lighthouse from the parking area, so I followed a paved but steep path down to the cliff where the lighthouse stands.

2. Bass Harbour Light DSCN0507 The lighthouse is still owned and occupied by the U.S. Coast Guard and serves as a personal residence. Therefore, one can only walk along the paved path to see the lighthouse. You are not suppose to go up on the lawn or approach the door of the house. I cannot imagine what it must be like to always have tourists walking around outside your door but it must be worth it to live here and always have the sea before you.

Lesson Learned (MWT)

1. back porch My back porch with red cooler.

Last week I showed you my summer Sanctuary where I sit on my back porch and observe nature. I have seen so many critters in my backyard, including chipmunks, woodchucks, bunny rabbits, and red and gray squirrels.

2. gray squirrel-kab Gray Squirrel

The gray squirrels are the most prolific, most persistent critters in the back yard. There are more gray squirrels than red squirrels and while the red squirrels have a fiery and feisty temperament the grays show the least fear of me. They have learned to leap up straight to my bird feeders to get around the squirrel baffles and help themselves to seed.

3. critter feeding station-kab Squirrel and critter feeding stumps.

So, as a peace offering and deterrent, I pulled two stumps out of the woods and set them up at the edge of the lawn as a critter feeding station. I no sooner dump seed out here than the red and gray squirrels show up, along with an army worth of chipmunks. It doesn’t take long before all the seed is gone! I have also observed American Crows and Blue Jays eating at this location. One morning when I went to spread some seed I even found deer hoof prints in the soft ground in front of the stumps! However, I have yet to actually see a deer around here! On the weekend I bought some new squirrel food and decided I could just leave it in this red cooler on the back porch. After all, it is thick and insulated and the lid fits rather tightly. The seed was all in a plastic bag, so I had no fear of it tainting the inside of the cooler. I thought all was well. I thought wrong.

4. cooler on porch-kab On Monday morning when I went out the back door this is what I saw!

5. not snow-kab No, that is not snow!

6. chew marks-kabIt is the gnawed off pieces of plastic where a squirrel tried to get at the seed stored in the red cooler! How could it even smell it? I don’t know, but it did. And If I think squirrels are a problem, just imagine if there were bears around!

7. squirrely-kab So, lesson learned: DO NOT STORE SQUIRREL FOOD OR BIRD SEED IN COOLERS ON THE BACK PORCH!  After all, they have their woodland table…

8. back porch-kab …and I have my back porch!

And that’s what I learned for…

My Summer Sanctuary (MWT)

1. summer sanctuary-kab My Summer Sanctuary

In the apartment where I currently live I have created a Summer Sanctuary on my back porch. Though I live in the quaint little town of Andover, Massachusetts and I live right on a State Highway, my back porch is where I sit and watch the many birds and other animals which find refuge here. The large 2-story house blocks the sounds from the main road and the many tall trees provide shade and sanctuary for all of us. I often come out here first thing in the morning to eat my breakfast, drink a cup of coffee or tea, and count the birds for eBird. I hope you enjoy this view of My World today.
