Pink Fire in the Sky

1. DSC_0805-kab The Last Sunset of Monsoon 2012 on September 13

As a single thundercloud moved over the valley I happened to go out onto my balcony and saw this! I quickly grabbed my camera and started snapping. The sky looked as if it were on aflame with the color pink! It was brief, but breathtaking while it lasted. This is just one of the perks of being back in Tucson!

Brooklyn Skies SWF

1. Brooklyn sky-kab Sky seen through the building canyons of Brooklyn, NY 5-20-12

These are just a few of the bits of sky I saw while on my recent trip to New York City. On our last day we travelled to Brooklyn and wandered the cemetery, parks and streets. The last shot was taken back in New York City somewhere near Central Park. It was my last look at the sky before I got in the car to leave.

Goose Flight Sky

1. Canada goose DSC_0067 Canada Goose in flight at Sacred Heart Park, Andover, MA 4-26-12

I was down at the park again this morning hoping to find some warblers or something but nothing new showed up. However, as I was standing by the river I heard the distinct honking of a goose in flight, so I readied my camera and looked in the direction of the sound. As the goose came flying over the treetops in a cloudless blue sky I followed it with my camera until it was gone. You can see additional photos of geese in flight in the post below when I went birding at the bog earlier this week when we Finally got Some Rain. Happy Skywatch Friday and don’t forget to click on the links!

Skywatch Friday

After watching birds at the Petsmart parking lot on Tuesday I stopped off at the Geremonty Marsh in Salem, New Hampshire to count birds there. I saw fewer birds here than I did in the parking lot but I did see one new species for this location: A Cooper’s Hawk! I watched as it went into a stoop and dived for a dove on the ground but it missed and flew off casually as if nothing had happened! Right now all the flowering trees are in bloom and it is all so pretty and promising. However, we are in desperate need of rain as several wildfires have started all up and down the east coast. I notice that the water levels are dropping here at the marsh as well as at the Stirling Bog and in the Shawsheen River back in Andover, MA where I live. I hope you have a pleasant and bird filled weekend!

New York City Shades of Blue SWF

1. columbus circle-kab 1. Morning Glory Blue at Columbus Circle

Last weekend Gus and I traveled to New York city with my youngest brother. While I have been here several times now with C, this was Gus’ first time to go and walk the streets of New York City. After arriving Friday evening we took a short walk around the city on the upper west side. The next morning while the rest of the world was painting the town green for St. Patrick's Day we walked around some more. I knew we would be walking a long way and I knew that this day would be about the sights and not about birds, so I left my Nikon D80 at the apartment and took along my small Nikon Coolpix S4000. As I was reviewing my snapshots of the day I was struck by how blue the skies were and how many shades of blue there were, thus inspiring this post. I hope you enjoy this photo essay of New York City Skies in Shades of Blue!

I went to count birds last Wednesday night, March 7, 2012 at Lion’s Pond in Colchester, CT. Little did I know that I would get to watch the moonrise as well. As grackles and red-winged blackbirds flew across the sky and a pair of mallards settled onto the pond, the full moon slipped up from behind the tree line and floated into the sky. What a treat!
