A Day of Birds at Reid State Park

DSC_0569 Common Eider hens and ducklings 7-22-2015

I like to go to Reid State Park in Georgetown, Maine to bird. I never know what I will find, but it is always beautiful and always surprising! On this fine summer day in July I got my closest look ever at eider ducklings.

I was looking for sanderlings but didn’t find any. Still, It was a fun afternoon of birding with 25 species counted and I am glad I went. I am still learning my shorebirds and I find it quite a challenge!

  2. You do see some picturesque places on your bird outings Kathie, and always those lovely birds. Thanks for visiting. The Dartmoor ponies, though they roam wild on the Moors, actually belong to farmers and aren’t actually ‘wild’. The reasons given for making it illegal to feed them are because it attracts them to the roads where they can be hit by cars, also people feed them all kinds of human junk which can make them ill, and also they might hurt people trying to get to that food if they are too used to it and I think there have been cases, so the laws were put in place to protect not only the ponies but the people too. Glad you enjoyed my photos. I always enjoy my visits here. Have a great week.

  4. Hi Kathie, I have a problem ID'ying Waders in UK, but looking at your species online could it be a Western Sandpiper.

    1. Roy, it is more likely a white-rumped sandpiper, or possibly a winter plumage dunlin I think. But the lighting is so poor that it is hard to tell.
